About the Author

Professor Judyth Sachs has recently stepped down as Deputy Vice Chancellor and Provost at Macquarie University, a position she held from December 2006, to take up a role with KPMG. Prior to joining Macquarie she held various positions at the University of Sydney, Griffith University and The University of Queensland. From June 2003 to December 2006 she was Pro-Vice Chancellor (Learning and Teaching), Chair of the Academic Board (2001-June 2003) and Professor of Education (1996-2006) at the University of Sydney. She holds a BA and a PhD from the University of Queensland and an MA from Western Michigan University.

Lindie Clark is Academic and Programs Director, PACE at Macquarie University. In this role she is responsible for the overall management and leadership of the PACE program. She has published a monograph through Cambridge University Press, a number of book chapters , journal articles and conference presentations. About the Author

George McVey is a pastor that grew up in a Christian home. He prayed a prayer of salvation at the tender age of six and continued in church until his teens. At around age sixteen, George became disillusioned with what he saw in church and Christians and began looking for something else. Like so often happens in that situation, he was introduced to the occult and spent the next two years as a practicing Satanist. In his late twenties, George returned to the faith of his childhood and soon thereafter felt the call of God on his life to reach out to young people like he had been. In 1995, George began working as a youth minister and did that for the next five years. As a youth pastor, he has written several youth devotionals and lessons for himself and other part-time and volunteer pastors as well as two complete youth retreats. ccording to Chapman, the five ways to express and experience love called "love languages" are:

• words of affirmation,
• quality timequality,
• receiving gifts,
• acts of service,
• physical touch

Examples are given from his counseling practice, as well as questions to help determine one's own love languages. According to Chapman's theory, each person has one primary and one secondary love language.

Chapman suggests that to discover another person's love language, one must observe the way they express love to others, and analyze what they complain about most often and what they request from their significant other most often. He theorizes that people tend to naturally give love in the way that they prefer to receive love, and better communication between couples can be accomplished when one can demonstrate caring to the other person in the love language the recipient understands. An example would be if a husband's love language is acts of service, he may be confused when he does the laundry for his wife and she doesn't perceive that as an act of love, viewing it as simply performing household duties, because the love language she comprehends is words of affirmation (verbal affirmation that he loves her). She may try to use what she values, words of affirmation, to express her love to him, which he would not value as much as she does. If she understands his love language and mows the lawn for him, he perceives it in his love language as an act of expressing her love for him; likewise, if he tells her he loves her, she values that as an act of love.

Egbert and Polk (2006) suggests that the Five Love Languages might have some degree of psychometri validity.
